When you go there, his wife will most likely be the one taking your order, and Jiro will be preparing it. Jiro has worked for many years in Japanese restaurants, and now he wants a place of his own. All of his bowls are about $10, which makes for an affordable lunch or dinner, and if you consider the quality, a real bargain.Ħ. Chirashi Sushi Don by Jiro’s bowls are satisfying, but not too much volume.ĥ. I don’t need a huge lunch most days, and I find it frustrating to find healthy portions at many restaurants. The suhsi bowls not only taste great, they also look great, too.Ĥ. A lot of restaurants go for speed and volume, which makes for some very sloppy looking dishes. ![]() I used to live in Japan, where they often took great effort to make sure the food on the plate looked great. Jiro, the owner, told me that he wouldn’t add several items to his menu because he couldn’t get the quality of ingredients he wanted.ģ, Great presentation. With such a delicate balance of fish, fresh and pickled vegetables, quality is essential. Even though I love the Chinese and Thai restaurants here, we don’t need another restaurant doing the same thing. Nobody is doing this in Kona right now, so it’s added to what we have available. It’s a bit like a poke bowl, but there are more ingredients and it’s much more flavorful. Sushi-don is sushi on a bed of rice with additional ingredients. It’s between the ice cream shop and the drug store (Longs/CVS).ġ. It is located in a small kiosk in the Lanihau Center between Palani Road and Henry Street. This weeks I’d like to put a spotlight on Chirashi Sushi Don by Jiro. Other than local ownership, my only criteria is that the food is awesome or great in some way. Lobster poke, hamachi, unagi, chilled duck breast, kimchi, radish greens, a two-minute egg and a pickled cucumber. This bowl has got all the best things in life. ![]() Yes, I know that sounds cr azy, but this is it! My all-time favorite di sh: the Lobster Duck Chirashi Sushi. I wish I had a lighting rig an d a better camera because this bowl is the best food I’ve ever eaten. This is the last meal I’d like to share with you. Please forgive the poor image quality. We set a course for the other side of the Island to the big little city of Hilo. Some have called this shop “The Best Sushi on the Big Island.” I obviously haven’t spent enough time in Hawaii to make any such claim, but I will say that it was damn good and made me dance a bit. The acidic oils actually cook the fish a bit. Poke is small chunks of raw fish (usually tuna) marinated in sea salt, shoyu (soy sauce) and sesame oil. Speaking of local favorites, Nest Stop: The Pine Tree Cafe They are available at almost every supermarket and even most gas stations. The unofficial “Hawaiian Powerba r,” featuring fried spam and egg placed on a bed of sushi rice and wrapped with seaweed. That might sound crazy, but believe it or not, Spam and rice rolls are ac tually very popular in Hawaii. Like most conveyor belt joints, this was some cheap stuff and the crew isn’t afraid to have a bit of fun making some weird rolls. The only thing better than eating raw fish is staring at a never ending train of raw fish while eating more raw fish. There’s just something inherently fun about picking food off a moving conveyor belt. Sushi Conveyor belts are hard to come by, so I was pretty excited to see this. I recently had a trip the Big Island of Hawaii where my girlfriend showed me around her home town for some super sushi action. An everyday quest for ultimate sushi power! ![]() That said, when I’m on vacation, I don’t hold back.
